Today, I’d like to challenge you to look at problems in a different light. From this moment on, change your vocabulary and your thinking by turning every “problem” into an “opportunity.” When you successfully make this transition, your whole prospective changes. Try thinking about this idea while saying, “I don’t have problems in my life, only opportunities!” Really concentrate on believing this statement. When you are able to make the mental transition, you will feel the difference in your attitude.
In my former corporate management position, I managed our customer service activities. We never viewed a difficulty (problem) surfaced by one of our customers as a negative. In fact, we called such events, “Customer Opportunities.” And, that mindset made all the difference in the world how we reacted to the event. From the onset, we looked for ways we could get a benefit from correcting, acknowledging and avoiding repeating such an event. The end result was that we were better able to satisfy concerns and rectify every situation. We improved the quality of our service and product and we impressed customers with our sensitivity and quick reaction to their concerns.
Whether you are looking at personnel issues on the job, customer concerns or obstacles of a personal nature, avoid applying the “problem” label to any of these situations. Look at them as a way to build a positive out of a negative. When you can successfully do this each and every time, “problems” will never surface in your life and your challenges will take on the power of an “opportunity”.
Last month, I made a strategic decision on the direction of my business. For those of you who have heard me speak or regularly read this newsletter, you know how strongly I stress getting focused. Well, I’ve finally listened to my own advice!!!
I don’t believe any of you would disagree that the future of our country rests with children. How well we prepare them for the future will determine what kind of future we will have as a nation and world. To that end, since July 1st I’ve begun to focus my business towards working with educational leaders to keep children first. That does not mean I won’t speak to business audiences again. What is does mean is that my primary focus and a majority of my marketing efforts will be directed towards audiences that influence children—school boards, superintendents, school administrators, teachers and support personnel. I’m also looking strongly at adding high school students to the mix. .
In August, I will be starting a new newsletter, Children First. If any current readers want to get on this distribution list, send me an email with the words “Children First” on the subject line.
Daily Reflections
Finding our focus and purpose in life is probably one of the most difficult decisions one can make. A practice I’ve found most helpful is a daily reflection period. I use early morning time because that’s when I do my best thinking.
The process begins with a prayer session to ground my spiritual side early in the day. I then engage in some reading. It might be spiritually or professionally based or both. I vary the routine. Once done, I write in a journal for a few minutes to capture my thinking. I’m not looking to fill a page—only a few sentences. Repeating this pattern daily has helped clarify my values, my thought process and my passion. From these, have come focus and purpose. At the end of the day, I review my activities of the day and what events have been positive and productive both personally and professionally. I’m now considering writing five events in a gratitude journal each day and probably will add this step shortly.
What system do you use to reflect on your daily accomplishments in the important areas of your life? Don’t have one? Why not commit to introduce this life-changing activity into your lifestyle. I promise you will open a whole new prospective on your potential and life will take on a more optimistic outlook. Why wouldn’t you want this in your life?
Refer and Win
Until August 15, I will be conducting a “Refer and Win” contest. For the reader who refers this newsletter to the most new subscribers or to my new newsletter, Children First, I am offering a free one-hour phone consultation. The second and third place winners will each receive a signed copy of my book, Searching for Success. My goal is to reach 2000 subscribers by the end of the year and you can help by requesting your friends and colleagues to subscribe. Have them send me their email address with the word “contest” on the subject line. Be sure to include your name and email address in the body so I’ll know whom to credit. You may also forward names and email addresses as well. Just be sure you’ve received permission from those you recommend.
Thanks for your help.
No matter what you do, you must market yourself. If you work for others, your marketing effort is how you perform your work. If you own your business, you must continuously market your product or service to your client base or potential clients. This newsletter is one method I use. Begin to think in terms of positioning and building value and your marketing effort will take on a new prospective in the eyes of your supervisor or potential customers.
Every successful entity is systemized. Begin today to develop yours and watch for new and more effective results to occur.
