Time and Choices

            Time is our most precious commodity.  We cannot add a single second to our days.  We have all the time available to even the most powerful on earth.  Time is the great equalizer.

            With such value, how can we enrich what we do with our allotted time?  When faced with tough decisions on the use of your time, ask yourself these two questions:  What is the worst thing that could happen if I don’t do this activity? and “Will this activity take me one step closer to any of my current goals?”

            I’ve come to realize that we often overrate the potential consequences of an act and give it more significance than it deserves.  Accurately answering the first question can often free you of doing a needless task.  The second question, when answered in the affirmative, assures that you are on the course you’ve selected.  By asking and answering these questions, making choices becomes a simpler and more productive process.

            Selection of the right priorities on a daily basis makes for a more productive day, week, month and year.  Eventually, the practice enables you to remain focused and working on what is most important to you.  What better use of the most precious gift life offers?

Habits—They Make or Break Us

 

            We are all creatures of habit.  Much of what we do each moment of our day is based upon habitual patterns.  As we go into the second month of the year, make a list of the habits that serve you well.  Exam how each produces the positive results you experience.  Resolve to grow the list and fine-tune their effectiveness.  Next, make a list of habits that do not serve you well.  Then, commit to remove each one from your daily habit patterns.  Replace them with new, life improvement habits.  This exercise will propel you ahead of the crowd because most are comfortable with their habits—good and bad.  They are not willing to do what they must to improve.  But, you are different.  You are committed to continuous growth.  You deserve a better life.  And, all improvement starts with the removal of the shackles of bad habits that bind our progress to greatness.

A Leadership Idea

            Before you can ever begin to be an effective leader, you must connect with people at an emotional level.  Intellect does not motive, emotions do.  If your message does not touch the heart, it will not connect and you will not lead anyone anywhere.  Connecting in a fashion that shows you really care, builds credibility and enhances commitment from those you seek to lead.  As the old saying goes, “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Thought of the Month

“Personal prayer connects to our God.”

            In this time of national mourning for the astronauts who lost their life, we are all drawn to a deeper spiritual calling.  The events since the 9/11 tragedy have moved our nation to a stronger reliance on prayer.  We pray for the well being of the families of the fallen seven as well as for the victims and family members of the 9/11 act of vengeance.  We pray for peace on earth.  We pray for the well being of our own family members to be able to cope with the stresses of daily living in this fast-moving 21st century.

            In mid-January, I attended my 13th consecutive retreat at Manresa.  For me it is an annual commitment to build spirituality within my own being and a time to continue the focus of my calling in life.

            I talked about habits earlier.  If you are not now engaged in daily prayers, why not consider the introduction of prayer as a habit to get you started for the day.  You just might be surprised at how well that works.
