Well

A Challenging Idea for
Managers to Consider
We’ve just
discussed the responsibility managers have to help grow the careers of those
under their supervision. While doing this, we cannot forget that we also have
a need to continuously grow our own skills. We need our own professional
growth plan as well. It doesn’t matter if you own the company. That does not
excuse you to perpetuate your way to ignorance.
In this fast
paced world, knowledge grows almost at the speed of light. It is impossible
to stay abreast of all the information available. But, by having a
structured, focused approach to strengthening our weaknesses and building on
our strengths, we can maximize our growth potential. The more we know, the
better we can help those under our supervision. Commit now to becoming the
best you possible. It is never too late to begin

Building A Focus and Brand
Can you complete this statement? “The pause that refreshes: __________.” If
you filled in the blank with the words, Coca Cola, you’ve just verified the
power of focus and branding for product identification. This phrase has not
been used by Coca Cola for many years but the idea is deeply engrained in the
minds of consumers who were around when the branding slogan was created.
What is your
company doing to establish such an identifiable phrase and brand? Are you
positioned in such a manner that when your branding phrase is said, people
immediately think about you?
To answer
these questions about my own company, The Results Group, I recently engaged
in a brainstorming session with my speaker friend, Doug Smart, CSP from
Atlanta, GA. Doug and I spent over an hour working on a focus and brand for
one segment of my business—work with school boards across the United States.
Those of you
who are familiar with my background know that I have extensive experience in
school board service. I’ve presented to national, regional, state and local
school board meetings during in the past 20 years but still found myself
lacking real market identification. My discussion with Doug helped develop an
eight-word phrase—“Teaching politically free
boardmenship that keeps children first.”
This
statement captures the core message I always strive to have school board
members understand and put into practice. It is simple, memorable, emotional,
and right on target with my message. Thanks Doug!
By the end of
the year, every state school board association will be familiar with this
message. It now forms the foundation of my positioning efforts in this
market.
Why not spend
time thinking about the real focus of your business? Boil your thoughts down
to as few words as possible. This is really energizing. Then, engage in a
campaign to let the world know your identify.
That’s what I
plan to do!
The First Effort
OK. I’m not bashful about spreading the word. Does your local school board
need help? Do they need to take the “politics out of politics?” Why not have
them contact me to review the specific services developed just for them or
simply pass on a contact to me and I’ll do the rest.
PS: These ideas also with other political bodies such as city, county or
parish officials. Let’s get on a campaign to refine the political atmosphere
of this country and move the focus to servant leadership for citizens and
children.
Thought of the Month
“It’s not what you know that counts. It’s what you do
with what you know that makes a difference.”
